DAVID LLOYD LEISURE TO ACQUIRE COUNTRY CLUB GENEVA
-Acquisition will become DLL’s 124th club and is DLLs ninth new club this year-
David Lloyd Leisure (DLL), Europe’s leading health and fitness group* today announces that it has signed an agreement to acquire Country Club Geneva, the city’s most renowned tennis club, currently owned by Swiss businesswoman Dona Bertarelli. The deal is due to complete in April and it will become the company’s 124th club.
Country Club Geneva is a premium sports and wellness club located on the outskirts of Geneva that offers unparalleled facilities, including 11 tennis courts, a fitness space, a golf driving range and a major spa area. It was completely renovated in 2017 and DLL plans to invest over £8 million to further develop the site, which still has expansion potential.
Country Club Geneva will become David Lloyd Leisure’s second club in the region, following its acquisition of the City Green Sport and Health Club near Geneva in 2017, after which it invested over £5 million in redeveloping the club. Including this latest acquisition, the company has 24 clubs internationally with locations in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Italy, France and now Switzerland, in addition to its 100 clubs in the UK.
The club’s 35 employees will join David Lloyd Leisure’s 8600 team members who work at the group’s existing clubs across Europe. David Lloyd Leisure has been named as one of the UK’s top 25 large companies to work for** for the last four years, and is committed to investing in and developing the existing team at the club, as well as creating further job opportunities.
2020 DLL continues to look for expansion opportunities across Europe, including acquisitions and new build sites. Over the last few years, DLL has experienced significant growth, increasing its club count from 83 to 123 in the last five years. It is now Europe’s number one health and fitness operator by revenue, with over 660,000 members. In January 2020 it announced that it had acquired the Meridian Spa Group which operates eight health and wellness clubs across Germany.
Glenn Earlam, CEO David Lloyd Leisure commented: “Country Club Geneva is one of the largest and most prestigious health clubs in the region and is a strong fit for the David Lloyd Clubs’ premium, family-focused brand. The club has seen significant investment in recent years, but we believe it has yet greater potential and have ambitious plans to further enhance the clubs’ fitness and wellbeing facilities.
We have ambitious growth plans and 2020 has got off to a flying start with the addition of nine new clubs to our group, with more deals in the pipeline. We are firmly on track to achieve our goal of 150 clubs by 2026.”
Dona Bertarelli said: “Since 2001 I have been committed to strengthening the positioning of Country Club Geneva as a benchmark tennis club, both nationally and internationally, and to expanding its offerings to be a leading wellness center. The club is now in the best hands to ensure an even brighter future. It has been gratifying to find a group like David Lloyd Leisure, which shares the same values of passion for sport and excellence in services that have guided my time with Country Club Geneva. I am pleased that the club is joining such a prestigious international network, and I am sure that it will bring significant benefits to the club's members.”
“I would like to thank the employees and management of the club for their continuous efforts over the years to make the objectives we set become a reality. I am sure that in David Lloyd Leisure they will find the support to continue growing successfully,” she added.
